Mahjong History and Rules

An introduction to the game, its history, and what makes American Mahjong special.

Introduction to American Mahjong

American Mahjong is more than a game — it’s a way to connect, unwind, and share joyful moments with fellow players. Whether you’re brand new or you’ve been playing for years, Mahjong Waves celebrates the unique blend of strategy, tradition, and camaraderie that defines this version of Mahjong.

On our MAHJOURNEYS cruises, American Mahjong becomes a highlight of the voyage. With long, relaxing sea days, inspiring destinations, and a welcoming community, the ship becomes the perfect place to learn, practise, compete, and make new Mahjong friends from around the world.

Mahjong Waves is your hub for everything related to American Mahjong onboard: rules, activities, tournaments, friendly play, and the spirit of connection that brings our travellers back year after year.

Tournament Rules

Our tournaments are designed to be both exciting and inclusive — perfect for seasoned competitors and enthusiastic learners alike.

For players who love a little friendly competition, our onboard tournaments follow standard American Mahjong guidelines to ensure fairness, clarity, and a smooth flow of play.

While the full tournament rulebook will be provided to registered players, here’s what you can expect:
  • Official Card:
All competitive play follows the current year’s standard American Mahjong League card.
  • Structured Rounds:
Tournaments are organized into timed rounds, allowing players to rotate tables and enjoy a variety of opponents.
  • Scoring System:
Points are calculated using a traditional scoring format, with bonuses awarded for special hands or exceptional plays.
  • Qualified Oversight:
Games are hosted and supervised by experienced Mahjong players and instructors to maintain a welcoming and supportive environment.
  • Prizes & Recognition:
Daily cash prizes, draws, and awards contribute to a lively and encouraging tournament atmosphere.

Social Game Rules

Not all Mahjong onboard is competitive — in fact, some of the best memories come from the relaxed, chatty, laughter-filled tables. Social Games are ideal for newcomers, casual players, or anyone who just wants to unwind between shore excursions.
Social play follows a simplified, easygoing structure:
  • Flexible Seating:
Players can join or leave games throughout the day.
  • Modified Timing:
Rounds are not strictly timed, allowing for a gentler, more conversational style of play.
  • House Rules Welcome.:
While basic American Mahjong rules are followed, groups may agree on small variations for comfort and fun.
  • Guided Learning:
Beginners are welcome — our hosts and instructors happily provide tips, explanations, and supportive coaching.
  • Community-Centred:
The focus is on connection, shared experiences, and creating friendships that often last beyond the cruise.
Social Games create a warm, inclusive environment where everyone — from first-timers to lifelong players — can enjoy the rhythm and beauty of Mahjong at sea.
